Painting Description
"Harmony in Red" (originally titled "La Desserte") is a celebrated painting by French artist Henri Matisse, completed in 1908. It is considered one of the most prominent works of Matisse's Fauvist period and is notable for its vibrant use of color and large-scale dimensions, measuring approximately 180 cm × 220 cm (70.9 in × 86.6 in). The painting is housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The artwork depicts a domestic interior scene, a common subject in Matisse's oeuvre, featuring a table set for a meal, with a woman standing beside it. The composition is dominated by an intense red that covers the walls, tablecloth, and even extends into the patterned floor, creating a flat, decorative effect that challenges traditional perspectives. This use of a single color to unify the space was a radical departure from the naturalistic representation of interior spaces and reflected Matisse's interest in expressing emotion through color.
"Harmony in Red" was originally commissioned by the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, who requested a canvas to decorate his dining room. Matisse initially painted the scene in blue but was dissatisfied with the result. He then overpainted it in red, which resulted in the powerful, harmonious composition we see today. The painting's bold use of color, simplified forms, and disregard for conventional representation of space exemplify the Fauvist movement's break from Impressionism and its exploration of color as an independent element.
The work is often discussed in the context of Matisse's career as a pivotal moment in his exploration of color and pattern, which would continue to evolve in his later works. "Harmony in Red" is not only a masterpiece of Fauvism but also a significant contribution to the development of modern art, influencing generations of artists with its innovative approach to color and composition.
