Martin began his career at a young age, initially studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg and later in Paris. His early career was marked by a variety of artistic pursuits, including working as an illustrator for various newspapers and magazines.

His major breakthrough came when he started working with Hergé, the creator of 'The Adventures of Tintin.' Martin joined the team of artists at Tintin magazine in 1948, where he began developing 'Alix.' The series quickly gained popularity due to its meticulously researched settings and engaging storytelling, which were inspired by Martin's fascination with history and archaeology.

Throughout his career, Jacques Martin also created other notable series, including 'Lefranc' in 1952, which follows the adventures of a journalist, and 'Jhen' in 1978, another series set in the past, focusing on the Middle Ages. Martin's comics often featured themes of adventure and historical fiction, blending narrative with educational elements.

Martin's dedication to historical accuracy in his artwork was particularly influential in the Franco-Belgian comics scene. He is considered one of the 'founding fathers' of the historical adventure genre in comics. His legacy includes not only his own series but also the inspiration he provided to subsequent generations of comic artists and writers.

Jacques Martin continued to work on his series well into his old age, although he eventually had to rely on various assistants due to failing eyesight. He passed away on January 21, 2010, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of European comics. His work remains celebrated for its clarity, educational value, and its ability to transport readers to different times and places with a sense of authenticity and adventure.
