Nicolaj Konstantinov Roerich Paintings

Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich was a multifaceted Russian artist, writer, archaeologist, theosophist, philosopher, and public figure, who in his lifetime achieved significant influence and respect. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to a well-to-do family, Roerich displayed early artistic talent and a deep interest in history and archeology. He studied simultaneously at the University of Saint Petersburg and the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1893 to 1897 and received a broad education that included law and art. Roerich moved to Paris in 1900 to study at a private studio and immerse himself in the vibrant artistic community. Returning to Russia, he became involved in several art movements and was instrumental in founding the World of Art movement. Roerich's philosophy and artworks were deeply influenced by his belief in Eastern spirituality and mysticism, which also guided his later expeditions across Asia, including India and Tibet. His paintings often depicted dramatic landscapes and mythical subjects, infused with a sense of profound spirituality and peace. After the Russian Revolution, Roerich and his family settled in the United States in 1920, where he continued his cultural and artistic activities. In the 1930s, Roerich initiated the Roerich Pact, an international treaty for the protection of artistic and scientific institutions and historical sites. He spent his later years in India, where he continued his research in Eastern philosophy and culture until his death in 1947. Roerich left behind a vast legacy of art and writings, and he is remembered as a significant figure in Russian and international cultural history.
