Pieter III Casteels Paintings

Pieter III Casteels was a Flemish painter born in Antwerp in 1684. He was part of a family of artists, with both his father, Pieter II Casteels, and his brother, Pieter II Casteels, also being notable painters. Pieter III moved to England around 1708, where he became known for his vibrant works in still life and bird paintings.

Casteels' career in England flourished as he engaged in various artistic projects. He is particularly renowned for his series 'Twelve Months of Flowers' (1730) and 'Twelve Months of Fruit' (1732), which showcased his skill in depicting intricate botanical details and his keen observation of natural elements. These works were highly influential and contributed to the popularization of botanical illustration in England.

Aside from his botanical works, Casteels also participated in the decoration of several prominent buildings and designed illustrations for books. His involvement in the art community extended to his role in founding the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1761, although he passed away in Richmond, Surrey in 1749, before seeing the full fruition of this organization. Pieter III Casteels' legacy is marked by his contribution to the development of botanical art and his influence on the artistic scene in early 18th-century England.
