Painting Description
"Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto" is a ceiling painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, created in 1597 for the Casino Ludovisi, a private room in the Villa Ludovisi, Rome, commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte. This artwork is unique in Caravaggio's oeuvre as it is his only known ceiling painting and one of the few mythological subjects he ever undertook. The painting depicts the three gods, who are also the namesakes of the planets Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto, in a tondo (circular) format, which was a common design for ceiling paintings of the period.
The work is executed in oil directly on plaster and measures approximately 300 cm in diameter. Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro, a technique characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark, is evident in this painting and helps to create a dramatic effect. The gods are represented with symbols associated with their respective domains: Jupiter with the eagle and the globe, Neptune with the trident and a horse, and Pluto with the riches of the earth and the three-headed dog Cerberus.
The painting is notable for its illusionistic qualities; Caravaggio painted it in such a way that from below, the viewer has the impression that the gods are looking down from the heavens. This trompe-l'œil effect was a sophisticated addition to the grandeur of the villa's decoration. The inclusion of the artist's self-portrait as the face of Pluto adds a personal touch to the work, which was a common practice among artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
"Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto" is an important work in the study of Caravaggio's artistic development, as it showcases his skill in handling large-scale compositions and his ability to adapt his signature naturalistic style to a mythological subject. The painting remains in situ in the Casino Ludovisi, which is now part of a private residence, and is considered one of the highlights of Caravaggio's early career.
