Claude Jean-Baptiste Hoin was an 18th-century French painter known for his portraits and landscape paintings. Born on November 21, 1750, in Bourges, France, Hoin received his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. He studied under the tutelage of Joseph-Marie Vien, a significant painter of the French Neoclassical movement. Hoin's style was influenced by his mentor and by the broader Neoclassical aesthetic, which emphasized clarity of form, sober colors, and the idealized approach to figure drawing.

In 1771, Hoin won the second prize at the Prix de Rome, which was a prestigious scholarship that allowed young artists to study in Rome. Although he did not win the top prize, this recognition provided him with opportunities to exhibit his work at the Paris Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Hoin began exhibiting at the Salon in 1791 and continued to do so throughout his career.

Hoin's body of work primarily consists of portraits, which were in high demand during his lifetime. He portrayed various members of the French society, including nobility, bourgeois, and intellectuals. His portrait style was characterized by a refined elegance and a focus on the psychological presence of the sitter. Hoin's landscapes, although less known, show a sensitivity to the natural environment and are imbued with a serene atmosphere.
