Isobel Naftel Paintings

Isobel Lilian Gloag, née Naftel (1850-1930), was a British artist known for her paintings and illustrations. Born in London, England, Gloag was a part of the artistic milieu of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She initially studied at the South Kensington Art School, which is now known as the Royal College of Art. Her education there laid the foundation for her artistic career, which spanned several decades.

Gloag's work was characterized by its detailed and often dramatic depictions of historical, mythological, and literary themes. Her style blended elements of the prevalent Victorian aesthetic with a distinct personal touch, often exploring themes of femininity and mysticism. One of her most famous works, 'The Magic Crystal,' exemplifies her interest in spiritualism and the occult which was popular at the time.

She exhibited her works at various prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy of Arts and the Society of British Artists. Gloag was also a member of the Society of Women Artists, an organization that sought to provide women artists with greater opportunities for exhibition and recognition during a time when the art world was largely male-dominated.

Despite her contributions to art during her lifetime, Isobel Lilian Gloag's work was somewhat overshadowed by her male contemporaries and has only more recently been subject to renewed interest and appreciation. Her paintings can be found in collections both private and public, and her contributions to the world of Victorian art continue to be studied and celebrated for their unique qualities and historical significance.
