Opie's talent caught the attention of Dr. John Wolcot (Peter Pindar), who became his mentor and introduced him to the London art scene in 1781.
In London, Opie quickly gained recognition as a portrait painter. His naturalistic style and ability to capture the character of his subjects made him popular among a wide range of clients. He was dubbed 'the Cornish Wonder' and attracted the patronage of leading figures of the day, including members of the royal family.
