José Benlliure y Gil was a Spanish painter who was born in Valencia on September 30, 1855. He belonged to an artistic family; his brother Mariano Benlliure was a well-known sculptor. José showed an early interest in art and initially trained at the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia.
