Nicholas Richard Brewer Paintings

He was the son of a farmer and showed an early interest in art, which his family supported. Brewer studied art formally at the Cooper Union in New York and later in Europe, where he honed his skills in the classical tradition.

Brewer's career spanned over six decades, during which he became well-known for his portraits, often of prominent individuals, including several governors of Minnesota, and other influential figures of his time. He was also recognized for his landscape paintings, which captured the essence of the American Midwest and the picturesque scenery of Minnesota's lakes and forests.

In addition to his painting, Brewer was a respected teacher. He taught at the St. Paul School of Fine Arts and was instrumental in the development of the Minneapolis School of Art, now known as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
