Richard Simkin Paintings

Richard Simkin was an English artist and illustrator, born on November 5, 1850, in Herne Bay, Kent, England. He is best known for his work as a military artist, and his illustrations are noted for their historical accuracy and attention to detail, particularly with respect to military uniforms and regalia.

Simkin was largely self-taught, although he did spend some time studying at Heatherley's Art School in London. He began his career illustrating for various magazines, including 'The Illustrated London News' and 'The Graphic', among others. His first significant work came in the form of a series of watercolors of the British Army regiments, which he started in the 1870s. These were later published as a part of a book titled 'Army and Navy Drolleries'.

However, Simkin is perhaps most renowned for his collaboration with the military historian Major General Richard Cannon on the book 'Historical Record of the British Army', for which he produced a large number of paintings illustrating the history and uniforms of every regiment. His work was characterized by the meticulous research he conducted into the uniforms and equipment of British and other armies, which involved consulting with military experts and studying actual items of clothing and equipment.

Simkin's work continued to be in demand throughout his life, and he produced hundreds of illustrations for cigarette cards and postcards, which were very popular among the public. His illustrations also appeared in a variety of children's books and magazines.

Despite the commercial nature of much of his work, Simkin's illustrations have been praised for their historical value and have been used as reference material by military historians and enthusiasts. His paintings can be found in military museums and collections around the world.

Richard Simkin continued to work until his death on June 23, 1926. His legacy as one of the foremost military artists of his time endures, and his work remains a valuable resource for understanding the history and appearance of military uniforms over several centuries.
