He began his artistic education at the Turku Drawing School and later continued his studies at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School in Helsinki.

However, as he developed his style, he began to incorporate elements of impressionism, which he was exposed to during his travels and studies in Europe, particularly in Italy and France.
