Zheng Min was a Chinese artist, poet, and scholar, born in November 1920 in Fuzhou, Fujian province, China. She was part of the third generation of modern Chinese poets and a prominent figure in the development of contemporary Chinese poetry. Zheng's work is noted for its innovative use of language and exploration of new poetic expressions. Her poetry often reflected her philosophical musings, personal experiences, and the turbulent changes occurring in China throughout her lifetime.

Zheng Min received her early education in China, but her academic pursuits were interrupted by the Second Sino-Japanese War. Despite the challenges of the era, she continued her education at Southwest Associated University, which was a temporary establishment combining Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University during the war. It was during this time that she became deeply involved in literary activities and began to establish herself as a poet.

After the war, Zheng Min traveled to the United States to further her studies. She attended Brown University and later Stanford University, where she studied literature and deeply engaged with Western poetic traditions. Her exposure to Western literature, as well as her scholarly pursuits, greatly influenced her poetic style. She sought to blend Western techniques with Chinese literary traditions, creating a unique voice within the context of modern Chinese literature.

Upon returning to China, Zheng Min embarked on an academic career, becoming a respected professor and literary critic. She taught at Peking University and was involved in various literary circles, actively contributing to the intellectual and cultural discourse of the time. Her poetry, characterized by its lyrical beauty and intellectual depth, gained significant recognition and she became an influential figure among her contemporaries.

Zheng Min's life was not without hardship. The political turmoil of China's Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976 brought significant challenges, including periods of political persecution. Nevertheless, she persisted in her literary and academic endeavors, and after the Cultural Revolution, her work began to receive renewed attention. In her later years, Zheng Min continued to write and publish poetry, and her contributions to Chinese literature were increasingly celebrated.

Throughout her career, Zheng Min published several collections of poetry and essays, leaving a lasting impact on the field of Chinese literature. Her works have been studied by scholars and enjoyed by readers who appreciate her innovative approach to poetry and her ability to capture the complexities of the human experience. Zheng Min passed away in February 2021 at the age of 100, leaving behind a rich legacy as one of the foremost poets of her generation.
