Rosen began his formal musical education at the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Moriz Rosenthal, a pupil of Franz Liszt, and later with Josef Hofmann.

Rosen continued his studies at Princeton University, where he pursued a degree in French literature, while also focusing on his piano career. He made his professional debut in 1952, performing Franz Joseph Haydn's Piano Sonata in E-flat major at Carnegie Hall. Rosen's other significant works include 'Sonata Forms' (1980), which is a detailed analysis of the sonata form in Western classical music, and 'The Romantic Generation' (1995), which explores the music and aesthetic of the early Romantic period.

He was also a dedicated teacher, serving on the faculties of several prestigious institutions, including the University of Chicago and Harvard University. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and honors, including a National Book Award for 'The Classical Style'.
