He was the son of a prominent lawyer and notary, which could have afforded him a comfortable lifestyle and a solid education. Willers began his formal art education in Hamburg before moving to Düsseldorf, which was one of the most important art centers in Germany at the time. There, he studied under the guidance of Oswald Achenbach and Andreas Achenbach, brothers who were both renowned landscape painters. The Düsseldorf School of Painting, with which he became associated, was known for its meticulous approach to detail, its romantic interpretation of nature, and its tendency to infuse landscapes with mood and atmosphere.
