Painting Description
"The Death of Sardanapalus" is a monumental oil painting by the French Romantic artist Eugène Delacroix. Completed in 1827, the painting is inspired by the historical tale of Sardanapalus, a legendary Assyrian king, as recounted by the ancient Greek historian Diodorus Siculus and dramatized by the 19th-century poet Lord Byron in his play "Sardanapalus" (1821). Delacroix's work is renowned for its vivid depiction of the king's final hours, as he orders the destruction of his possessions, including his horses, concubines, and treasures, in a grandiose act of defiance and despair upon learning of his imminent defeat.
Measuring an impressive 392 × 496 cm (154 × 195 in), the painting is a prime example of Romanticism, characterized by its dramatic and emotive qualities, rich color palette, and complex composition. The scene is set in an opulent chamber where chaos and violence unfold, capturing the tumultuous emotions of the moment. The king, largely indifferent to the carnage, reclines on a sumptuous bed, overseeing the execution of his command.
"The Death of Sardanapalus" was controversial at the time of its unveiling at the Salon of 1827-1828 due to its radical departure from classical norms and its intense emotional and sensual expression. The painting's theatricality and emphasis on the exotic and the morbid encapsulate the Romantic fascination with the sublime and the oriental. Delacroix's innovative use of color and expressive brushwork would go on to influence a generation of artists, including the Impressionists and Symbolists.
Today, "The Death of Sardanapalus" is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris and remains a seminal work in the history of art, reflecting Delacroix's status as a leading figure of the Romantic movement and his enduring impact on the development of modern painting.
