George Cole was an English actor whose career spanned over seven decades, making him one of the most recognizable and enduring figures in British television and film. Born on April 22, 1925, in Tooting, London, Cole grew up in a working-class environment during a time of economic hardship. Despite the challenges of his early years, he developed a passion for acting at a young age and began his career in entertainment as a child actor.

Cole's acting career officially started when he was just 14 years old, after being adopted into the family of comedian Alastair Sim, who became his mentor and later appeared alongside him in several films. This early break set the tone for a prolific career that would include roles in both comedy and drama, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Perhaps best known for his role as Arthur Daley in the iconic British television series 'Minder', George Cole became a household name in the UK and abroad. 'Minder' ran from 1979 to 1994, and Cole's portrayal of the cunning but lovable rogue Arthur Daley became synonymous with the actor himself. His character, always on the lookout for the next dodgy deal, was beloved by audiences for his wit, charm, and the humorous escapades he often found himself in.

In addition to his television work, Cole had a successful film career. He appeared in over 60 films, including notable roles in the 'St. Trinian's' series where he played the unscrupulous businessman Flash Harry, a role that further cemented his reputation as a versatile character actor. His other film credits include 'Cleopatra' (1963), where he played Flavius, and 'The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery' (1966).

Despite his success on screen, Cole was known to be a private man, dedicated to his craft and family. He was married twice, first to Eileen Moore (1954-1962) and then to actress Penny Morrell, with whom he remained until his death. George Cole was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1992 for his services to drama, a testament to his significant contribution to British entertainment.

George Cole passed away on August 5, 2015, at the age of 90. His death marked the end of an era for many fans who had grown up watching his performances. Cole's legacy, however, lives on through the countless films and television shows he appeared in, remembered fondly for his contribution to the arts and the laughter he brought to audiences around the world.
