Original Description
Goyo Hashiguchi's A Beauty Kneeling Before A Mirror (1920) is a mesmerizing shin-hanga (new prints) masterpiece that exemplifies early 20th-century Japanese woodblock artistry. The intimate scene depicts a young woman draped in an exquisitely patterned kimono, her graceful pose captured mid-ritual as she gazes into a handheld mirror – a poetic meditation on vanity and transience. The muted indigos and soft earth tones glow with bokashi (gradated ink) technique, while delicate linework renders the textiles’ chrysanthemum motifs with almost tactile precision. As one of only 16 designs Hashiguchi completed before his untimely death, this print bridges ukiyo-e traditions with modern sensibilities, earning canonical status among collectors for its technical perfection and psychological depth. Notably, surviving impressions remain exceedingly rare since original blocks were destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.
For interiors seeking refined elegance, display this piece prominently as a conversation-starting focal point. Choose a space with indirect natural light – perhaps a minimalist study or serene bedroom alcove – where its subdued palette harmonizes with neutral walls or dark walnut furnishings. Opt for a museum-quality frame in slender black lacquer to complement the print's sumi ink lines, maintaining a 5-inch mat border to accentuate the composition’s breathing space. At the standard ōban size (~15" x 10"), it pairs beautifully with contemporary artisanal objects like a raku pottery vase or low-profile ikebana arrangement. In offices, position it near seating areas to create visual respite; the contemplative subject matter subtly encourages mindful pauses. Avoid cluttering nearby surfaces, letting the work's quiet sophistication resonate through restrained styling that echoes Hashiguchi’s "less is more" aesthetic philosophy.
