Painting Description
urora" is a fresco painting created by Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni, in the early 17th century, for the garden pav of Palazzo Rospigliosi-Pallavicini, a Roman palace. The fresco depicts a mythological scene based on the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, leading the chariot of Apollo (the sun god), across the sky to announce the beginning of a new day.
The artwork is renowned for its dynamic depiction of movement and light – indicative of Reni's mastery and his dramatic Baroque style. In the fresco, Apollo's chariot is drawn by four horses, racing through clouds and an ethereal sky, followed by a light-casting figure symbolizing daybreak.
The composition is complemented by a cluster of figures: the Hours or Horae, who were female goddesses in Greek mythology that represented the times of day, are seen accompanying Apollo’s divine procession across the sky. These youthful and dynamic figures are adorned in fluttering classical robes and they add a lyrical rhythm to the overall narrative of the painting. Their motions in unison and their upward gaze towards Apollo add a sense of grandeur to the divine figure of the sun god.
Lastly, the figure of Tithonus, Aurora's aged husband, is observed at the bottom right of the picture, symbolizing the transience of life. He is seen wrinkled and strained, a stark contrast to the dynamic, youthful, and energetic representations of Aurora and the other celestial beings.
Reni's fresco of Aurora has been lauded as one of the paramount illustrations of Baroque classicism. Its rich iconography, vivacious energy, and atmospheric quality confirm it among the artistic greats of Roman frescoes.
