Johann Matthias Ranftl was an Austrian painter, born on August 23, 1804, in Vienna. His talent for the arts became evident early on, and he pursued his passion by studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of the renowned painter Johann Peter Krafft.

Ranftl's work primarily focused on genre painting, which captures everyday life scenes, and he was particularly noted for his realistic portrayal of the Austrian peasantry. His paintings were characterized by their attention to detail, vivid character expressions, and the use of light and shade to add depth to his compositions.
