Painting Description
"Bank Swallow. Violet-green Swallow (plate Ccclxxxv) Riparia Riparia. Tachycineta Thalassina" is a work by the renowned American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter John James Audubon, known for his detailed and illustrative bird studies which were compiled in his monumental work, "The Birds of America." This particular plate, numbered CCCXXXV (385), features two species: the Bank Swallow (Riparia riparia), known for its burrowing nesting habits along riverbanks and cliffs, and the Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina), distinguished by its vibrant green upperparts and white underparts.
Audubon's "The Birds of America" is a seminal collection of life-sized prints, produced between 1827 and 1838, that remains one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon's combination of artistic skill and empirical observation created a blend of science and art that was groundbreaking at the time and continues to be celebrated for its contribution to natural history and its aesthetic beauty.
In plate CCCXXXV, Audubon captures the essence of the Bank Swallow and the Violet-green Swallow with his characteristic attention to detail and accuracy in depicting the birds' anatomy and behavior. His work not only served as an important scientific record but also as an inspiration for conservation efforts and the appreciation of avian life.
As with all of Audubon's plates, the image would have been originally hand-painted by Audubon himself and then reproduced through the labor-intensive process of engraving, printing, and hand-coloring for distribution to his subscribers. Today, Audubon's plates, including the Bank Swallow and Violet-green Swallow, are highly prized by collectors and institutions, and they continue to inform and inspire both artists and ornithologists around the world.
