Painting Description
''Fugaku Hyakkei'' (富嶽百景), translated as "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji," is a series of ukiyo-e prints by the renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎). Created between 1834 and 1849, this monumental work consists of three volumes containing a total of 102 prints. The series is a comprehensive exploration of Mount Fuji, a subject of deep cultural and spiritual significance in Japan, and showcases Hokusai's fascination with the mountain's diverse appearances under various seasonal, weather, and light conditions.
Hokusai, who lived from 1760 to 1849, was in his seventies when he began working on ''Fugaku Hyakkei''. The series reflects his lifelong interest in nature and landscape, which is also evident in his other famous works, such as ''Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'', which includes the iconic print ''The Great Wave off Kanagawa''. In ''Fugaku Hyakkei'', Hokusai captures the omnipresence of Mount Fuji across the Japanese landscape, depicting it from different provinces, from both near and far, and in relation to the daily lives of the Japanese people.
The prints in ''Fugaku Hyakkei'' are characterized by their intricate detail, imaginative composition, and the use of perspective, which was influenced by Western art. Hokusai's innovative techniques and his ability to evoke emotion and atmosphere through the use of line and color have earned him a lasting place in the history of art. The series not only represents the pinnacle of Hokusai's artistic achievement but also provides a valuable insight into the Edo period's culture and aesthetics.
''Fugaku Hyakkei'' is considered one of Hokusai's masterpieces and continues to be celebrated for its artistic excellence and its influence on both Eastern and Western art. The series has been widely studied and admired, contributing significantly to the perception of Mount Fuji as a symbol of Japan and to the popularity of Hokusai's work in the global art canon.
