Arthur Bower Forwood, 1st Baronet (23 June 1827 – 27 September 1898), was a prominent British businessman and Conservative politician, known for his significant contributions to the commercial and political landscape of Liverpool during the late 19th century. Born into a well-established family, Forwood was the son of Thomas Brittain Forwood, a successful merchant. He was educated at Liverpool College, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in business and public service.
Forwood's business acumen became evident early in his career as he joined the family firm, Thomas B. Forwood & Co., which was heavily involved in the shipping industry. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations, becoming one of the leading shipping firms in Liverpool. His success in business earned him a reputation as a shrewd and capable entrepreneur, which subsequently paved the way for his entry into politics.
In 1885, Forwood was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Ormskirk, a position he held until his death in 1898. During his tenure, he was known for his strong advocacy of maritime interests and his commitment to the economic development of Liverpool. His political career was marked by his appointment as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty from 1886 to 1892, where he played a crucial role in naval administration and policy-making.
Forwood's contributions to public life were recognized in 1895 when he was created a baronet, of The Priory, Gateacre, in the County of Lancaster. His legacy includes not only his impact on Liverpool's commercial growth but also his philanthropic efforts, which benefited various local institutions and charities.
