Painting Description
''Les Grimaces'' is a series of lithographs created by the French painter and draftsman Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761–1845). Boilly, who was active during a period that spanned the late 18th and early 19th centuries, is best known for his genre scenes and for his contributions to the development of lithography in France. ''Les Grimaces'' is considered one of his most notable works in the medium of lithography and is recognized for its humorous and satirical portrayal of human expressions and social mores.
The series, which consists of 96 plates, was produced between 1823 and 1828. Each plate in ''Les Grimaces'' features a variety of caricatured faces, contorted in exaggerated expressions. Boilly's work in this series is characterized by its keen observation of facial expressions and the social commentary implicit in the exaggerated forms. The lithographs were not only a display of artistic skill but also a reflection of the changing political and social landscape of France during the post-Revolutionary period.
Boilly's ''Les Grimaces'' gained popularity for its wit and the technical proficiency of its lithography. The series contributed to the burgeoning interest in caricature and the study of physiognomy, which was a popular pseudo-science of the era that attempted to link physical appearance, especially facial features, with personality traits and moral character. ''Les Grimaces'' remains an important example of early 19th-century French lithography and a significant work in Boilly's oeuvre, offering insights into the period's cultural and artistic trends.
