Painting Description
''Les Joueurs de Cartes'' (The Card Players) is a series of oil paintings by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne painted during Cézanne's final period in the early 1890s. The series is considered by critics to be one of his most ambitious projects and some of his greatest achievements in painting. Comprising five paintings of different sizes, the series depicts Provençal peasants immersed in smoking and playing cards.
The paintings vary in size, the number of players, and the setting in which the game takes place. Cézanne's approach to these compositions is noted for its departure from the animated, communal scenes of card players depicted by earlier artists, such as Caravaggio and the Le Nain brothers. Instead, Cézanne's players are intensely quiet and concentrated, reflecting a more meditative state. This shift in perspective was a departure from the storytelling traditions of the genre, focusing more on the synthesis of form, color, and light.
The largest version, now held at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, measures 134.6 by 180.3 centimeters and features a group of four men playing cards. The other four, with varying numbers of players and onlookers, are displayed in prominent museums around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and a private collection.
Cézanne's methodical approach to the Card Players series involved studying his subjects in detail, often painting them in individual studies before integrating them into the group compositions. This meticulous process reflects his developing aesthetic that sought to simplify forms to their geometric essentials and to explore the interplay of color planes and spatial relationships.
The Card Players series has been celebrated for its profound influence on the development of modern art. Cézanne's reduction of objects to their basic shapes anticipated the rise of Cubism, while his focus on the physicality of the paint and the process of perception influenced subsequent generations of artists. The series is often cited as a prelude to the 20th century's abstract movements and remains a testament to Cézanne's pivotal role in the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.
