He pursued his passion for art by studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League in New York City, where he refined his skills and developed his distinctive style.

Carter's career as an illustrator gained momentum in the 1920s and 1930s. He became recognized for his illustrations in popular magazines such as 'The Saturday Evening Post,' 'Cosmopolitan,' and 'Vogue.' His work often featured women in contemporary settings, and he was known for his ability to capture the elegance and sophistication of the female form. Carter's illustrations were not only popular among readers but also were highly regarded for their technical proficiency and artistic quality.
