Painting Description
"The Doom Fulfilled" is a painting by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, a British artist and designer closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the later phase of the movement. Created in 1888, this artwork is part of a series of paintings known as "The Perseus Series," which illustrates the story of the Greek hero Perseus from mythology. The series was commissioned by the future Prime Minister, Arthur Balfour, to decorate the drawing room of his London residence.
"The Doom Fulfilled" is the penultimate painting in the series of ten and depicts the moment when Perseus reveals the head of the Gorgon Medusa to the court of King Polydectes, turning the king and his followers to stone. This act of retribution fulfills the prophecy that Perseus would cause the death of his grandfather, Acrisius, who is also inadvertently turned to stone when witnessing the event.
Burne-Jones's work is characterized by its dreamlike quality and meticulous attention to detail, both of which are evident in "The Doom Fulfilled." The painting is imbued with the artist's signature style, which often features elongated figures, a muted color palette, and a focus on narrative and symbolism. The composition reflects Burne-Jones's interest in classical themes and his ability to convey intense emotion and drama through his art.
"The Doom Fulfilled" is a significant work within Burne-Jones's oeuvre and the broader context of Pre-Raphaelite art, exemplifying the movement's fascination with medieval and classical subjects, as well as its commitment to high craftsmanship and the synthesis of fine and decorative arts. The painting is held in a private collection, and its influence can be seen in the continued appreciation and study of Pre-Raphaelite artwork and the enduring legacy of Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones.
