Painting Description
"Nakatsugawa Z Cyklu: Kisokaido Rokujukyu Tsugi-no Uchi" (Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido) is a renowned series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints created by the eminent Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige, between approximately 1835 and 1842. This series depicts the sixty-nine post stations (stopping points) along the Kisokaido, the secondary route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, which was known for its scenic mountain landscapes and challenging terrain.
Hiroshige's work is celebrated for its masterful composition, delicate use of color, and the ability to evoke the atmosphere of each location. The series was a collaborative effort with another famous ukiyo-e artist, Keisai Eisen, who started the series. However, Hiroshige completed the majority of the prints, including the Nakatsugawa print. The Nakatsugawa station, depicted in this particular print, was the thirty-fourth of the sixty-nine stations on the Kisokaido route.
The print captures the essence of Nakatsugawa, showcasing travelers and the local scenery with Hiroshige's characteristic attention to detail and seasonal elements. The series as a whole is a significant cultural artifact, offering insights into the travel culture of the Edo period and the Japanese landscape before industrialization.
Utagawa Hiroshige's "Kisokaido Rokujukyu Tsugi-no Uchi" series is highly regarded in the art world for its historical value and artistic merit. The prints, including later editions, remain sought after by collectors and are held in various museum collections worldwide. They continue to influence modern art and design, reflecting Hiroshige's enduring legacy as one of Japan's great masters of ukiyo-e.
