Original Description
Utamaro’s Three Beauties of the Present Day (c. 1793) is a mesmerising trio portrait that epitomises the grace and subtlety of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Depicting famed beauties of Edo-era pleasure quarters – geisha Tomimoto Toyohina, teahouse waitress Takashima Hisa, and a third figure (possibly Naniwaya Kita) – the work exudes quiet elegance through delicate linework, soft colour gradations, and intimate framing. As Utamaro masterfully captures their distinctive expressions and postures, the painting reveals his genius in psychological portraiture beyond conventional bijin-ga (beauty prints). The piece represents a pivotal moment when ukiyo-e transcended commercial prints to become high art, cementing Utamaro’s status as the premier portrayer of femininity in Japanese art history. Now housed in the Tokyo National Museum, it remains one of the most reproduced images of the Edo period.
For displaying this masterpiece in contemporary spaces, consider pairing its muted earth tones (creams, ochres, soft blacks) with minimalist Japanese-inspired interiors. A medium-sized giclée reproduction (approx. 60×90 cm) would command attention as a focal point in a study or lounge, ideally against a shoji-screen-style neutral wall. The vertical composition fits perfectly in narrow alcoves or alongside low-profile furniture with clean lines. Complement the artwork with natural materials like rattan or ash wood furnishings, and introduce subtle textile echoes through indigo-dyed cushions or a tatami-style rug. In offices, its serene aesthetic harmonises with Scandinavian or wabi-sabi decor schemes, where the women’s contemplative gazes create an atmosphere of refined tranquility amidst modern workspaces. Always avoid clashing with vibrant colours – let Utamaro’s nuanced palette dictate the room’s colour story.
