Painting Description
"Nebuchadnezzar" is a colour monotype print with additions in ink and watercolour created by the English poet, painter, and printmaker William Blake in 1795. Part of a series of prints known as the "Large Colour Prints," the work depicts the biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar II, the powerful King of Babylon, who, according to the Book of Daniel, was punished by God for his pride and arrogance. In a dream interpreted by Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar was forewarned of his downfall, which came to pass when he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen, his body wet with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws.
Blake's portrayal of Nebuchadnezzar is a dramatic and vivid illustration of the king's descent into animalistic madness. The image shows the once-mighty ruler crawling on all fours, with wild eyes and a disheveled appearance, emphasizing the themes of downfall and the loss of reason. The work is a reflection of Blake's interest in the spiritual and moral consequences of pride and the belief in the possibility of redemption through suffering.
The print is significant within Blake's oeuvre for its expressive use of colour and innovative printmaking technique, which involved applying coloured inks to a copper plate with brushes and other tools before printing. This allowed for a unique combination of printmaking and painting that was characteristic of Blake's highly individual and visionary style. "Nebuchadnezzar" is considered one of Blake's most powerful and evocative works, encapsulating his artistic and philosophical concerns. It is held in several prestigious collections and remains an important piece for the study of Blake's art and the Romantic period.
