Painting Description
''Weisskunig'' ("The White King") is a renowned 16th-century chivalric and autobiographical novel that allegorically recounts the life and deeds of Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire. The text, which remained unpublished during Maximilian's lifetime, was a part of his ambitious personal program to promote his reign and legacy through various artistic and literary projects. The ''Weisskunig'' was conceived by Maximilian himself and was written with the assistance of his secretary, Marx Treitzsaurwein, who compiled and edited the Emperor's autobiographical notes and narratives.
The work is notable for its extensive series of woodcut illustrations, which were created under the direction of the German artist Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531). Burgkmair, a prominent figure in the Northern Renaissance and a pioneer in the use of chiaroscuro in woodcuts, was responsible for the majority of the illustrations, which are considered masterpieces of the medium. The woodcuts provide a visual complement to the text, depicting various events in the life of the allegorical White King, from his noble deeds and battles to courtly life and imperial ceremonies.
The ''Weisskunig'' was not printed until 1775, long after the deaths of both Maximilian and Burgkmair. The posthumous publication of the work, alongside other similar projects such as ''Theuerdank'' and the ''Triumphal Arch'', contributed to the enduring cultural legacy of Maximilian I and provided a rich source of historical and artistic insight into the period. The ''Weisskunig'' is now recognized as an important document of early modern European history and art, offering a unique perspective on the self-representation of a Renaissance ruler and the interplay between text and image in the propagation of royal propaganda.
