Painting Description
Ariwara no Narihira (在原業平, 825–880) was a distinguished Japanese courtier and poet of the early Heian period. He is traditionally identified as one of the Six Poetic Geniuses (Rokkasen) and is celebrated as one of the Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry (Sanjūrokkasen). Narihira's poetry is characterized by its emotional depth and refined elegance, often reflecting themes of love, nature, and the impermanence of life. His works are prominently featured in the "Kokin Wakashū" (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems), an imperial anthology compiled in the early 10th century.
Narihira is also believed to be the protagonist of the "Ise Monogatari" (The Tales of Ise), a collection of uta monogatari (poem tales) that blend poetry and prose to narrate episodes from the life of a nobleman, often assumed to be Narihira himself. These tales offer a glimpse into the romantic and adventurous life of the Heian aristocracy, and Narihira's character is depicted as a quintessential lover and a man of deep sensitivity.
In addition to his literary contributions, Narihira's life and persona have been immortalized in various forms of Japanese art and culture. One notable depiction is by the renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, who created a print titled "Le Poete Ariwara No Narihira." This artwork is part of Hokusai's series "Hyakunin Isshu Uba Ga Etoki" (One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse), which illustrates famous poets and their verses from the classical anthology "Hyakunin Isshu" (One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each). Hokusai's portrayal of Narihira captures the poet's elegance and the timeless appeal of his verse, further cementing his legacy in Japanese cultural history.
Narihira's influence extends beyond his poetry; his life and works have inspired countless adaptations in literature, theater, and visual arts, making him a central figure in the canon of Japanese classical literature. His enduring legacy continues to be a subject of scholarly study and artistic homage, reflecting the profound impact of his contributions to Japanese culture.
