Painting Description
''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' is a subject depicted by Leonardo da Vinci in at least one, and perhaps two, paintings begun in 1499 or later. Leonardo was recorded as being at work on one such picture in Florence in 1501 for Florimond Robertet, a secretary to King Louis XII of France. This may have been delivered to the French court in 1507, though it is not clear that the work was the one now in the Louvre, which is generally accepted as Leonardo's work. There are two versions of the composition, one in the Louvre, and the other in the National Gallery, London, plus several other copies. Other versions are in the Buccleuch and Lansdowne collections.
''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, who is holding a yarnwinder, symbolic of the cross, an anticipation of his Passion. The painting's attribution to Leonardo has been disputed in the past, but most scholarly opinion now tends to recognize Leonardo's authorship of the core composition, while noting that the work was likely completed with the assistance of his workshop. The exact dates of inception and completion for the painting are not known, but it is estimated that Leonardo began working on it after 1510, during his mature period.
The painting has a tumultuous history, having been stolen twice in the 20th and 21st centuries and subsequently recovered. Its provenance and the extent of Leonardo's involvement in versions other than the one in the Louvre have been subjects of intense scholarly debate. The composition's quality and the thematic integration of religious and symbolic elements make it an important work in understanding Leonardo's artistic and philosophical contributions to Renaissance art. The ''Madonna with the Yarnwinder'' is celebrated for its exquisite detail, emotional resonance, and innovative portrayal of the Madonna and Child, reflecting Leonardo's ceaseless exploration of science, nature, and human emotion.
