Painting Description
"De Paardenmarkt" (The Horse Fair) is a renowned painting by the French artist Rosa Bonheur, completed in 1855. This monumental work, measuring approximately 244.5 cm × 506.7 cm (8 ft × 16.5 ft), is widely considered Bonheur's masterpiece and a seminal piece in 19th-century animal painting. The painting is celebrated for its realistic depiction of the horse market held in Paris on the tree-lined Boulevard de l'Hôpital, near the asylum of Salpêtrière, where Bonheur sketched from life.
Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur on March 16, 1822, was a pioneering female artist known for her commitment to animal subjects and her role in the French Realist movement. "De Paardenmarkt" reflects her deep understanding of equine anatomy and her ability to capture the dynamic energy of the horses and their handlers. Bonheur's meticulous attention to detail and her skill in rendering the musculature and movement of the horses contribute to the painting's sense of vitality and grandeur.
The artist prepared for this work by making numerous sketches and studies, and she reportedly visited the horse market incognito, dressed as a man to avoid drawing attention in what was then a predominantly male environment. Bonheur's dedication to her craft and her direct observation of her subjects are evident in the painting's authenticity and the life it conveys.
"De Paardenmarkt" was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1853 and received widespread acclaim, enhancing Bonheur's reputation in France and abroad. The painting was subsequently shown in the United Kingdom, where it garnered further praise and was eventually acquired by Cornelius Vanderbilt for display in the United States. Today, the original painting is part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it continues to be admired for its technical excellence and its celebration of the animal form.
